Facing crew anger, SpiceJet reverts to serving them hot meals on flights

New Delhi: Pilots and cabin crew of SpiceJet will again get hot meals during flights. The low cost carrier on Tuesday shelved its month-long program of discontinuing hot meals for crew that had started on September 1, following criticism from them.

“The one month experiment to have a different meal onboard and the system of not uplifting hot meals seems to be not meeting the desired logistical results. Hence with immediate effect we are reverting to the previous system for the cockpit crew and working on improving the goody bag and the meals. Your support and understanding is appreciated and like always the management is still open to any suggestions,” SpiceJet chief pilot Captain S K Dabral said in a mail to pilots on Tuesday.

Under the now-scrapped experiment, SpiceJet had stopped taking hot meal for crew on its flights and was instead giving cabin crew and pilots operating domestic flights a daily allowance of Rs 300 when they were flying so that they could have hot meals at airport terminals or buy on board. The crew were been told if the “crew wants to have a hot meal (or any other snack), they may buy the same from the cart using their meal allowance.”
