Fly smart: Staying well fed in the era of airline cuts

This week was big in the sense that Jet Airways made a significant move, eliminating the meal inclusion on certain low-fare classes. Vistara had already done the same thing earlier this year, while launching Vistara Lite fares. It is important to know that meals are not going away for everyone, but just a miniscule percentage of the travelers.

I empathise with those who still need to eat on a plane. Sometimes, even for me, that is the only time during the day I get an opportunity to catch a meal after a busy workday. While eating on board as an activity was made optional by the no-frills carriers, there are many ways of still finding yourself a bite to survive.

If you are not a last minute kind of passenger, high chance you arrive at the airport a while before the check-in counters shut down. Not only do you have an assortment of restaurants to find yourself some food, you also have the airport lounge. You could get into this oasis of peace for free, something we’ve already discussed a while ago.

Mumbai Airport has recently launched a grab-and-go hot meal carts as well, something I hope other airports are able to launch soon. What they promise you is a hot, boxed meal for roughly Rs 150. These meal carts are to be found near the gates on Terminal 1. Not just that, you can get them to deliver fast food from many of the concessionaire stalls as well to the gate.

The drill in the air for no-frill carriers is pretty well settled. You’d get your samosa or sandwich, and pay for it on board. You should ideally pre-book, to get a better price, and the certainty that you’d get what you want.
