Shillong: Meghalaya High Court has expressed satisfaction over the commitment given by the state in making Umroi airport operational and directed the chief engineer, public works department (roads), to file a progress report every 10 days by indicating the daily volume of work.
The bench of Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice S.R. Sen passed the order on Wednesday after taking up a suo motu petition over the delay in making Umroi airport fully functional.
The airport in Ri Bhoi district, about 35km from here, was constructed in the mid-1960s and became operational in the mid-1970s.
The airport requires expansion and its 6,000-feet runway, which can support an ATR-42 aircraft, will be extended to about 8,000 feet to facilitate operation of bigger planes.
"The report filed today (Wednesday) reveals that for the purpose of land required for approach funnel of cluster-II and III, Rs 18,17,93,458 has been sanctioned," the order said.
