IndiGo hits a century with 101 flights from Kolkata

Kolkata: IndiGo airlines has become the first domestic carrier to have crossed the 100 dailyflight mark from the Kolkata airport.
With the addition of three flights by the airline last weekend, the count now stands at 101, more than four times the frequency of SpiceJet, the airline with the second-largest service from the city. In fact, IndiGo’s flight count is higher than all the other domestic carriers put together.

The ramp-up to 100 flights has happened in 12 years. The airline that first flew into Kolkata from Delhi on August 30, 2006, did the 25th departure to Mumbai. The airline’s 50th departure from the city was to Delhi, while its 75th departure was an international flight to Bangkok on December 21, 2012. On Saturday, it hit the century mark when a flight took off for Hyderabad in the afternoon. Thereafter, a flight to Surat took it to 101.

From September 16, IndiGo will add one more flight from the city on the international sector to Singapore.

The scene was very different two about two-and-a-half decades ago, when Indian Airlines and Air India, combined, had the largest number of flights, followed by Jet Airways.
