JDS MLC writes to Karnataka CM for development of Mangaluru airport

Bengaluru: Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) MLC BM Farooq, who hails from Dakshina Kannada district, wrote to Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy urged him to take up development work at Mangalore International Airport on a priority basis.

The Mangaluru airport needs around 36 acres of land to extend the present runway that can accommodate bigger planes, which is important for many international destinations.

Farooq has requested the CM to talk to Civil Aviation Ministry and to bring Mangaluru under the radar of UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme, and deploy more planes to Mangaluru.

In the recent floods that hit the state, Bangalore-Mangalore highway was completely blocked due to landslides and flying to Mangaluru was the only viable option.

At present, the airport has a 2.5 km-long runway. The planes usually backtrack after landing and enter the taxiway. If the runway and taxiway are expanded, the planes can easily exit to the taxiway, thus saving time for the airlines too.
