Kamal on Tuticorin airport row: If Sophia is a criminal, jail all netas

Chennai/New Delhi: Kamal Haasan joined top opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu today in backing Lois Sophia, a doctoral student who the BJP's Tamil Nadu chief said called the Union government "fascist", and was jailed.

Sophia, who was BJP leader Tamilisai Soundarrajan's co-passenger on a flight, was arrested last evening -- but released on bail today. Soundarrajan accused her of raising the slogan, "Down with the fascist BJP government".

"If raising slogans and expressing opinions in a public space is a crime, then all politicians are criminals who need to be arrested," Kamal Haasan, the president of the Makkal Needhi Maiam party, said.

Soundarrajan said Sophia made the "fascist" remark inside the plane's cabin.
