Research scholar who slammed BJP gets bail

During the hearing, the Magistrate advised Dr. Samy to see to it that his daughter did not get involved in similar incidents in the future.

On Tuesday evening, Ms. Sofia was discharged from the Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital, where she had been admitted on Monday night.

She headed home without talking to the waiting reporters.

She was booked under Sections 505(1)(b) (Intent to cause fear or alarm) and 290 (Public nuisance) of the IPC and Section 75(1)(c) of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act (Behaviour that could cause breach of public peace) by the Pudukottai all-women police on Ms. Soundararajan’s complaint. However, the Magistrate on Monday evening struck down the charge under Section 505(1)(b), while remanding her in judicial custody for 15 days.

Ms. Sofia, who aspires to be a scientist, is pursuing her Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Montreal in Canada. She finished her graduation from Delhi, and completed her postgraduation in Physics and Mathematics from Germany and Canada, respectively.
