Indian, foreign currency notes valued at Rs 1.9cr seized at airport

Madurai: The air intelligence unit of the customs department seized foreign currencies worth Rs 89.12 lakh and Indian currencies worth Rs 30 lakh -- totalling Rs 1.19 crore -- from two passengers at Madurai International Airport on Monday night.
The authorities caught the duo just a few minutes before they were to board a Singapore-bound Air India Express flight. The accused have been identified as Prem Nazir of Chennai and Rabeek Raja of Othakadai in Madurai.

Based on a tip, a team led by assistant commissioner D Venkadesh Babu picked up the duo and searched them. The officials recovered currencies from them. Nazir carried Indian currencies in the denomination of Rs 2,000 in a carton box while Raja carried foreign currencies, including the US dollar and Saudi riyal. They had covered the currencies using newspaper and cello tape.

The flight connecting Madurai and Singapore, reaches Madurai at 10.45pm and leaves at 11.15pm. Officials said that the accused could have fixed the flight expecting lesser vigilance, since it is the last flight out of Madurai.

Two separate cases were registered against Nazir and Raja. They were arrested.
