GoAir grounds 4 Airbus 320neo aircraft in Delhi

New Delhi: Four of GoAir’s Airbus 320neo (new engine option) aircraft fitted with Pratt & Whitney engines remain grounded in Delhi for want of spares from the American aerospace manufacturer, said a person aware of the matter.
Another of the Mumbai-based airline’s aircraft has been pulled out of operations owing to airframe related issue, said the person, who did not wish to be identified. A query emailed to GoAir did not elicit any response till late evening on Monday. Pratt & Whitney refused to comment on the matter.
IndiGo, another domestic airline which operates a fleet of Airbus 320neos fitted with P&W engines, has just one aircraft which is not operational but will start flying by Monday evening or Tuesday.
Air India and Vistara also operate Airbus320neos but with CFM engines, and they haven’t faced any issues with the aircraft. Indian carriers operate one of the world’s largest fleet of Airbus 320neos fitted with P&W engines, with a total of 74 such aircraft. IndiGo, which started operating a large fleet of these aircraft in April last year, has faced most problems with the P&W engines so far.
Following frequent failures on Airbus A320neo aircraft fitted with P&W engines, India’s aviation regulator had imposed frequent checks on these aircraft including inspection of engines after every 1,000 hours, instead of 1,500 hours as sought by P&W, and repeat inspection every 500 hours. The stringent directive remains in force. Other airlines are suffering too since the grounded aircraft at busy airports in Delhi and Mumbai take away parking space.
