Heavy rain, wind prompt flight diversion & late departures

Pune: A Vistara flight to the city from Delhi was diverted, while departure and arrival of several planes were moderately delayed on Tuesday evening because of heavy rain and gusty wind.
Around eight flights departing from Pune between 6pm and 9pm were delayed between half-an-hour to close to an hour, a source told TOI. Around five flights landed behind the schedule because of the weather conditions.

The heavy rain and strong wind hit many areas of the city on Tuesday evening. Residents of Vimannagar, close to the Lohegaon airport, claimed that the wind was strong enough to bring down branches of trees. They did not see any noticeable damage to buildings or infrastructure, though.

“As far as I know, no buildings suffered any damage because of the wind, nor did it break glass windowpanes. It did bring down some tree branches in my neighbourhood,” said Qaneez Sukhrani, a Vimannagar resident.

The weather forecast for October 2 of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted rain and thundershowers in some areas during the evening. The IMD website predicted heavy rain at isolated places over central Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It also stated that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds were very likely at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, central Maharashtra and Marathwada.
