Malaysian gold smuggling racket busted at Chennai airport

Chennai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has busted a gold smuggling racket from Malaysia at the Chennai airport and arrested two persons, according to a release from the directorate on Saturday.

Based on tip-offs, sleuths on Saturday intercepted two separate passengers and found 6.95 kg gold worth more than Rs 2.27 crore concealed in electronic appliances such as microwaves and electric hotplates.

On interrogation, the passengers claimed that their handler in Chennai had asked them to receive the electronic appliances at Bagdogra near the Nepal border. It is learnt that the gold was smuggled into India through the border after being transported from Malaysia. The two passengers have been remanded in judicial custody.
