New Jersey-bound Air India flight grounded at SVPI airport

Ahmedabad:  Passengers travelling to New Jersey, USA and London,UK, in the Air India flight AI031/172 had a hard time on Monday, as the aircraft — Boeing 788 — by which they were to travel to their destinations abroad, got grounded at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in Ahmedabad. The state-owned airlines’ flight, which flies on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad-London-Newark sector, arrived at the Terminal-2 of the SVPI airport at 4.50am from Mumbai, confirmed officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI).
“After landing, the aircraft was declared to have a technical snag. The boarding from Ahmedabad had not begun and the passengers from Ahmedabad were in the security-hold area. However, those who had come from Mumbai, had been deplaned,” said an AAI official.
“The weather RADAR of the aircraft was reported to have developed technical issues, according to Air India officials. They tried to rectify the problem continuously, however, in view of aircraft safety, the flight has been grounded at Ahmedabad,” said a statement issued by AAI.
Some 130 passengers, including 10 wheelchair-bound passengers and two infants, who were set to take the flight are all reported to be safe, confirmed AAI officials. “According to the station in-charge of Air India, after the clearances from Immigration and Customs, some 110 passengers were accommodated at local hotels in Ahmedabad. However, some 20 passengers preferred returning to their residences,” mentions the statement.
