‘No new terminal building planned at airport’

Surat:  Even as flight movements at Surat airport have increased in the last couple of months with new airlines like AirAsia and IndiGo starting operations, passengers travelling to and from Surat would continue to face difficulties.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) in reply to an RTI application has stated that there was no plan for construction of a new terminal building at Surat airport and that internal modification will be done to accommodate growing number of passengers and create facilities for international flight operations at the existing terminal building itself.

The AAI has allocated Rs5.5 crore for modification of the existing terminal building, which is now under tender stage.

At present, the terminal building is spread over 3,600 square metre area and that it will be extended on both sides to add another 5,746 square metres. This will take total area of the terminal building to 9,346 square meters. The carpet area of the terminal’s first floor will be extended from existing 3,200 square metres to 6,172 square metres.
