2 iconic Air India posters to be a part of auction house's inaugural event

Mumbai: Even as Shah Rukh Khan, who sports neither a moustache nor a turban, recently declared himself unofficial ambassador of Air India, the airline's official face the Maharajah is poised to enjoy the spotlight at an auction in the city. This well-travelled mascot is present as a motif in two iconic Air India posters created by Nargis Wadia (83) that will be auctioned at Taj Hotel on November 29.
Wadia worked as a visualizer and artist with Air India in the early 1950s, a heady era when Air India wanted to veer off the norm of straightforward posters and advertising used by other airlines. The posters will be part of auction house Sotheby's inaugural event in the city, titled 'Boundless India'. While one poster shows the Maharajah as a puppet dangling from the letters 'Prague', the other spells out the word 'Paris' using a bunch of women's legs and a shape that suggests the Air India Maharajah's turban dotting the letter 'i'.
