New Delhi: The sale of Air India’s domestic flight tickets in India is going to be handled entirely by an international agency whose official distributor in the country is a sister company of rival IndiGo. UK-based travel commerce platform Travelport said on October 11 that “it had won a competitive tender process undertaken by Air India for distribution of its domestic flight content in (India)…. It will begin to come into effect from November 2018 and be fully implemented by the end of 2019”.
IndiGo’s parent company is InterGlobe Enterprises. Its group firm, InterGlobe Technology Quotient (ITQ), is the official distributor of Travelport in India. IndiGo is India’s largest domestic airlines in terms of market share.
AI had in 2010 drawn flak when its call centre was run by an arm of IndiGo’s holding company, InterGlobe Enterprises. The Maharaja at that time got apprehensive as booking details — passenger names, contact numbers, flight details, price of tickets and mail ids — were with a sister company of the main rival.
Denying any conflict of interest, a senior AI official said the airline is already using this global distribution system (GDS) Travelport since 1990 and does 38% to 40% of its domestic sale through them. “All full service carriers in India are already distributing through Travelport for years,” the official said.
