Bigger airport terminal building by ’2020

Surat: Come 2020, the terminal building at Surat airport will be much bigger and swankier. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has invited tender applications for expansion of the existing terminal building to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and facilitate smooth operations of airlines.

Passengers and airport crusaders were running a campaign for a couple of years for the expansion of the terminal building. The campaign was intensified after AirAsia and IndiGo began operations from the city which swelled the number of passengers travelling to various destinations from 2,000 per day to over 3,000. Passenger traffic from Surat airport crossed a historic milestone of one lakh passengers in September. The total passenger traffic in the financial year 2018-19, until September-2018, was registered at 4.72 lakh.

At present, the airport is served by Air India, AirAsia, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air Odisha and Ventura Airconnect. The airport handles about 46 flight movements-arrival and departure-per day to various destinations. About 3,000 passengers travel daily to and from Surat airport, against capacity of existing terminal building to handle 250 passengers per hour only.
