Chennai airport plans new entry, exit points to terminals by next month

Chennai: Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to open new entry and exit points for domestic and international terminals at Chennai airport and introduce a new vehicle flow pattern for cars by next month, when a contractor is likely to take over parking lot and entry fee collection.
The airport authorities are redoing the traffic plan as work has begun to build multi-level car park on either side of airport metro station. As per the plan, vehicles reaching the domestic and international departures will enter the airport using two entries from GST Road and will be routed via two new ramps that connect to the flyover in front of the terminals. The advantage is that cars dropping off passengers at these two terminals do not have to cross the other terminal on their way out. It will also cut congestion as all vehicles queuing up currently to drive down the flyover need not take the same route.
The traffic pattern which was proposed in April, however, has to be changed temporarily because of the construction of multi-level car parking.
A senior official of AAI said officials at the headquarters were making changes in the vehicle flow pattern near the worksite so that there would not be hindrances or congestion when it was implemented.
