Customs seizes 700g gold from passenger at airport

Kochi: Cochin customs air intelligence unit sleuths seized gold bars weighing 700g from a passenger who reached Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) on Saturday.

Two bars and 17 pieces of gold were found concealed in the side cavity of a large stapler and a showpiece statue in the baggage of a Kozhikode resident, who reached Cial from Riyadh. The customs detained the gold and arrested the smuggler.

The commissioner of customs, Sumit Kumar, in the backdrop of the seizure urged employees of Cial, airline and ground-handling agencies and staff of other agencies working in the airport to provide information leading to seizures.

The informers will be rewarded and their identity will be kept confidential, the commissioner said. He added that the customs was investigating kingpins behind the smuggling rackets and that they would be nabbed soon.
