Integration of airport terminals to take off once new building is ready

Pune:  The first phase work for the new terminal building at the Pune airport will not include its integration with the existing facility, senior officials of the project consultant, Egis India, have said.
The construction of the building is expected to start by mid-November and the officials of Egis India, which has its headquarters in France, said construction of the structure would be a “big challenge” because of space constraints.

A senior Egis India official said the design of the new building, expected to be ready by August 2021, would be kept simple because of lack of space.

“The plan involves integration of the new terminal building with the existing one so that both the facilities can operate with more space and as a single unit. But if we carry on with the integration work along with the construction of the new building, it can lead to passengers’ hassles and also affect flight timings,” the official told TOI.

“When it comes to integration, we need to modify the existing building. The first phase of the project just involves construction of the new terminal building. It should be ready within 30 months. Once the building is ready, the two facilities will be integrated,” he added.
The biggest challenge for the consultant is the construction work because of space constraint and passenger load.
