Chennai: Air intelligence unit of the customs at Chennai airport detected a case of gold smuggling involving an employee of firm providing customer services for Air India. Customs officials recovered gold weighing 1.9kg from the employee and arrested him.
On information that gold was likely to be smuggled from Riyadh in a Saudia flight, customs officials kept a close surveillance on the movement of airport contractual staff at the bay area and aerobridge.
The officers noticed an employee of an airport agency coming out of the aircraft in a suspicious manner. He had entered the aircraft to complete arrival formalities.
The employee was identified as M Mohammed Azam, 27, who was working as a customer agent for AIATSL, a firm providing customer services for Air India.
When officials questioned him, he appeared to be nervous and was evasive in his replies.
When he was searched, a black colour mobile flip cover containing three black colour adhesive tape-wrapped packets was recovered which was unusually heavy. On sustained questioning, he revealed that he had received the mobile cover from a passenger in the Saudia flight. He was to hand over the same packets to the passenger outside the airport.
On cutting open the packets, three gold cut bars totally weighing 1.9kg and worth Rs. 62 lakh were recovered.
