Chennai airport contract employee held for helping passenger smuggle gold

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai international airport on Wednesday night arrested a contractual employee and a passenger who allegedly colluded to smuggle in one kg of gold, worth Rs 32 lakh, and 15 cartons of imported cigarettes, worth Rs 36,000.
The modus operandi was that the passenger would transfer the contraband to the staff in the men’s toilet and later collect it from the parking lot.

Based on a tip off, customs officials kept a close surveillance on the movement of airport staff and other service providers working in the airport bay area, immigration hall and customs arrival hall .

When passengers got down, officers noticed an employee of an airport agency walking in a suspicious manner who was coming from immigration side and going to gents’ toilet in the customs arrival hall.

It was observed that he took unusually long time and as soon as he came out from the toilet he was questioned by the officers. On sustained questioning, he revealed that he had hidden two packets in the toilet in the arrival hall which he had received from a passenger. He was to hand over the same packets to the passenger outside the airport.

He identified the passenger from whom he had received the packet as Rahuman Khan,29, who was apprehended while he was trying to cross the exit gate.
