Flight operations hit at Patna airport

Patna: Hundreds of flyers were stranded at the Jayaprakash Narayan International (JPNI) airport for hours as flight operations continued to be disrupted on the second consecutive day due to dense fog cover in the northern parts of the country and poor visibility in the state capital in the early morning hours.

Flight operations at the Patna airport began after 10am on Wednesday when the minimum visibility criterion of 1,000 metres for landing or take off was met. The airport recently reduced the minimum visibility criterion for flight operations from 1,200 metres to 1,000 metres after commissioning additional approach lights ahead of the runway.

Of the 36 flights, which are operating from the city airport at present, 14 (mainly IndiGo and GoAir airlines) operate on the Delhi route. Officials claimed most Delhi-bound flights were delayed for more than an hour on Wednesday, owing to dense fog cover in the national capital.

According to Patna airport’s assistant general manager (air traffic management) Santosh Kumar, “No flights were cancelled on Wednesday. I, however, urge flyers to check the timing of their flights before arriving at the airport.”

Flyers and those waiting to receive their friends and relatives at the airport were annoyed with the flight delays. One Manoj Kant Singh, who was standing outside the terminal building to receive his daughter, said her flight had been delayed by more than an hour.
