Gold, currency worth Rs 35.74 lakh seized at Chennai airport

Chennai: In a 12-hour period between Sunday night and Monday morning, customs officials at Chennai international airport seized foreign currencies worth Rs 22.5 lakh, gold worth Rs 13 lakh and shuttle cocks worth Rs 24,000 from passengers.

On Monday morning, Salim Mohamed Idith, 26, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur was intercepted at the airport and two thin gold rods concealed as beading material weighing 398 grams of 24 karat purity valued at Rs 13 lakhs and 25 dozens of ‘Yonexaerosensa’ shuttle cocks valued at Rs 24,000 were seized from him.
On Sunday night, based on a tip-off that currency was likely to be smuggled out from the city, five passengers namely Abbdul Matheen, 49, Rowther Naina, 28, Sickander, 40, Ibramsha, 40, Dawood Ali, 48, bound for Kuala Lumpur by an Air Asia Airlines flight were intercepted and foreign currencies worth Rs 12.5lakh, were found concealed in their rectums. Further, foreign currencies worth Rs 10 lakh, which were concealed in their wallets, were also recovered. It was seized under Customs Act 1962.
