High fare for maiden flight from Kannur

Air India Express (AIE), the low-cost arm of the national carrier, has drawn flak for cashing in on the demand from Non-Resident Keralites for seats to Abu Dhabi from the Kannur international airport on December 9, the day of commissioning of the airport.
The fare for an economy seat on the maiden IX715 flight of the AIE from Kannur international airport to Abu Dhabi has gone up to ₹33,296 on December 3. A break-up of the fare details in the reservation system of the AIE shows the basic fare as ₹26,400 and ₹6,896 as tax and charges.
The AIE authorities had said that the maiden flight was sold out in the first hour after booking commenced. But, authorities had kept a few seats for last-minute travellers and six seats were available for ₹33,296 on December 3 on the IX715 flight. The Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft can fly 189 passengers and the fare was ₹9,000 when booking began in the Kannur-Abu Dhabi sector.
Airline sources said dynamic pricing was adopted in the seats for last-minute flyers. “As demand increases, the fare will go up. There is no human intervention in this,” he said.
Compared to ₹33,296 being charged from Kannur to Abu Dhabi on December 9, the AIE is charging only ₹10,207 for its IX815 flight from Mangaluru, ₹7,711 from Kozhikode on IX363 flight, ₹8,856 on IX537 flight from Thiruvananthapuram and ₹6,856 from Cochin on IX419 flight to the same destination.
The basic fare for Abu Dhabi on December 9 from Mangaluru is ₹4,100, Kozhikode ₹ 2,100, Thiruvananthapuram ₹2,575 and ₹1,703 from Cochin.
