If NDA fails to announce JPC probe into Rafale deal, next govt will: Chidambaram

Bengaluru:Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram today demanded JPC probe into the Rafale deal signed by the NDA government to purchase 36 war jets and said, "if it did not heed to opposition demand, the next government that come to power post 2019 elections will do it’’.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, he said the NDA government had betrayed both the Indian Air Force, which badly needs much more war planes than the 36 Rafale jets ordered by the BJP-led government as well as the State-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd which was denied its rightful claim to co-produce the aircraft with Dassault Aviation, the French company which produced these war jets.
He said Rafale deal will be one of the issues over which the recent elections in five States were fought and BJP given a stern lesson. ‘’This will continue to be one of the important issues on which the next Lok Sabha elections will be fought.
He said the IAF was in dire need to increase its air might and wants 42 squadrons of fighter jets.
But now it had just 31.
