A panel of MPs has criticised the aviation ministry, saying it has failed to cap airfares and regulate baggage fess as well as cancellation charges.
The parliamentary panel on transport, tourism and culture submitted its action taken report in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, highlighting these issues.
This is the latest instance of airfares raising the hackles of MPs. In July this year, Rajya Sabha MPs had sought a cap on airfares and questioned the practice of airlines charging for booking seats on a plane. On several other occasions in the past too, MPs have made similar demands.
So far the aviation ministry has sided with airlines on the issue.
On Thursday, it told the panel that airlines are free to fix reasonable tariff and can fix a reasonable cancellation charge under the Aircraft Rules 1937.
Airfares in India are among the cheapest in India, according to airline bosses. Though airfares rise during peak season, the fierce competition among airlines has stifled an increase.
But the MPs said the ministry is not serious in containing fare surge in airlines. “The upper cap in airfare in all sectors is the need of the hour
and the needs of the people should be given due consideration while regulating airfare and luggage charges,” the panel said in the report.
