Patna: The security hold area at the Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport here will soon be expanded with construction of a pre-fabricated structure having capacity to accommodate 400 people. The new structure is proposed to be erected near the hangar of the state government at the airport within a fortnight.
Airport officials said the move was necessitated in view of overcrowding of flyers due to disruptions in flight operations in winter season. Officials said though no flight was cancelled or diverted on Tuesday, some flights got delayed by around half-an-hour or an hour due to the prevailing weather conditions.
The rush of passengers was visible at the airport even on Tuesday due to ensuing Christmas and New Year vacations. Passengers were seen waiting at the terminal building as few flights got delayed due to poor visibility.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had recently reduced the minimum visibility criterion for operation of flights at the city airport from 1200 metres to 1000 metres after installation of additional approach lights over a length of 210 metres. However, serpentine queues of passengers are still being witnessed at the airport owing to delayed flight operations.
