Squatters near Sholavaram airstrip get IAF notice

Chennai: Revival of the Sholavaram airstrip and the possibility of using it for commercial flights have gained ground as the Indian Air Force (IAF) has issued notices to encroachers in the vicinity. About 55 acres of land that was part of the airstrip belonging to the IAF has been encroached by 300 families.
Ministry of civil aviation has identified the airstrip, 25km away from the city, as an unserved facility that can be developed along with 13 other airports or airstrips under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) — Udan. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) may also look at an option of using Sholavaram to decongest Chennai airport as the proposal for a second airport is taking time.

Sources in the revenue department in Tiruvallur district said the IAF had issued notices to the residents 10 days ago. “The notices were directly served to the locals asking them to report with all the documents to meet the IAF officials over the encroachments before December 30,” a revenue official told TOI.

About 300 families have constructed houses on either side of the air strip. This apart, another 150 acres of ‘poromboke’ land notified as grazing field has been gobbled up, sources said.
