Trichy: Opposing the Centre's move on the privatization of six profitable airports in the country, the functionaries and the members of Airports Authority Employees Union (AAEU) in Trichy commenced a three-day protest here on Monday. They also expressed concern about the future of profit-making non-metro international airports like Trichy.
Around 50 employees from Trichy airport staged a sit-in protest in front of the old terminal carrying placards and raising slogans urging their demands.
The protesters alleged that the government of India had recently taken a decision to go for PPP model in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Mangalore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Lucknow airports where the Airport Authority of India has invested a huge amount of money in many projects. At this juncture, the government is acting on its own, without considering anything about the sacrifice of airport employees, and other guidelines with regard to the privatization of airports, they further stated. When no adverse report was reported against the Airport Authority of India by any agency or parliament committee with regard to airport’s performance and its profit-making trend, it is unnecessary for pushing these airports towards privatization.
