Two weddings and polls see air traffic soar

Mumbai/Delhi: A wedding in the Ambani family has led to a spike in air traffic with desi and global celebrities flying in for the celebrations. While Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s daughter Isha and Ajay and Swati Piramal’s son Anand tie the knot in Mumbai on Wednesday, the main pre-wedding party was held in Udaipur on Saturday. It followed the recent wedding of actor Priyanka Chopra and singer Nick Jonas in Jodhpur. Apart from Udaipur and Jodhpur, other airports in Rajasthan also witnessed a rise in the number of charters in recent days due to electioneering.

On Saturday, both Mumbai’s CSIA and Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport saw their highest number of flight movements. Udaipur, which has 16 scheduled arrivals and departures daily, saw as many as 71 landings that flew in guests like Hillary Clinton and Sachin Tendulkar, and 70 takeoffs. Scheduled airlines also added extra flights to the city.

CSIA (which has two cross runways, only one of which can be used at a time) handled 1,004 flights in 24 hours on December 8. Of these, 903 were scheduled airline flights and the rest were non-scheduled, including 31 freighter and three military flights. On June 5 this year, the airport had for the first time touched the four-figure mark in a day when it operated 1,003 flights. CSIA will be stretched to the limit this week when the big wedding takes place and may create yet another record.
