U’khand cabinet approves seaplane landing in Tehri Lake

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to seaplane operations in Tehri Lake. A seaplane can land both on a water body and on land. The state government, which aims to attract Indian and foreign tourists, will sign an MoU with the Airport Authority of India and the Centre to build a seaplane landing space on the lake.
Spokesperson of the Uttarakhand government, Madan Kaushik, told TOI that if everything goes according to plan, the first seaplane will land on Tehri Lake by next year. Initially, a 12 to 20 seater seaplane will ferry tourists from Dehradun to Tehri for Rs 5,000 per head.

“The Uttarakhand cabinet has approved a proposal sent by the Centre to land a seaplane at Tehri Lake. The project is part of Centre’s Udaan scheme,” said Kaushik.

Uttarakhand has also reduced the VAT on seaplane fuel from 20% to 1 %. A seaplane would cost up to 15 crore.

CM Trivendra Singh Rawat had announced earlier this year that Uttarakhand has a huge potential for seaplanes as mode of transport due to water bodies like Tehri Lake and Nainital Lake.
