2 detained at airport for possessing bullets

Pune: A businessman from and a railway motorman from Ghaziabad were detained at the airport early on Thursday morning after 24 bullets were detected in their baggage.

As many as 22 live cartridges of a .32 pistol were recovered from the businessman’s bag and two bullets of a .9mm pistol from the motorman’s bag. No firearms were found. The bullets were detected during baggage check at the time of issuing boarding passes to the duo. The businessman was booked on a flight to Bengaluru. The motorman had a ticket of to Delhi. Both were later handed over to the Airport police.

Senior inspector Dilip Shinde said, “They were detained between 4am and 4.30am after the baggage scanners revealed that they were transporting bullets. They did not declare the ammunition at the security check. They later told the police that they were not aware that the bullets were in their baggage.”

Shinde said, “The businessman possesses a licence. The motorman has sought time to verify the firearm licence of his joint family members. He visited Pune to meet his son, an IT professional, in Wagholi.”

He said, “The seized bullets would be sent to ballistic experts. No FIR has been registered. The police have made an entry and allowed the duo to go after conducting a preliminary inquiry. On receiving the experts’ opinion and documents of bullets purchased from the respective parties, we will decide on taking action.”
