Pune: The authorities at the Lohegaon airport have decided to allow airlines to operate one coach to ferry passengers to flights waiting on the tarmac.
“At the moment, only three airlines use coaches to ferry passengers to and from the terminal. However, unlike bigger airports, they cannot ferry the passengers of all their flights, as they have only coach and multiple flights in quick succession, especially late in the evening,” an official said.
“Now that the airport apron area has been increased, we have issued permission to airlines to use a coach. Now it is up to the airlines to use the coaches,” the official added.
For two years, passengers have been complaining about being made to walk from the terminal to the aircraft and vice versa, which they claimed was a hassle. This had intensified in 2017, when many passengers protested that they were being made to walk to the aircraft in extreme weather conditions such as rain and heat. Even in 2018, many passengers had raised this issue.
“We have already told our headquarters about (the permission). One coach is expected to arrive anytime now. We have been told that the coaches should be medium-sized. In all likelihood, we expect the coach to arrive before the onset of summer,” an airline official said.
