Chaos at Delhi airport as fog causes delay, cancellation of flights

New Delhi: Chaos prevailed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday after some 200 flights were affected because of dense fog. Passengers said that they were stuck at the airport for nine hours and they were not even informed about when the service was going to resume. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel also said that due to the flight cancellations and delays the airport looked like a "bus adda".

"There are days when at least five to six flights are delayed, and we face a lot of problem while managing the passengers," said the official.

"However, on Friday, it became very difficult to manage the passengers as many flights got diverted or delayed, and that resulted into a very crowded airport terminals," added the official.

The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited spokesperson, said, "Dense fog on Friday led to low visibility around the airport terminals, and because of that CAT III B has been activated since 5 am. Though departures took place till 5.30 am and the arrivals till 6 am, flight operations were affected."
