Chennai: Central-Airport direct metro may stop

Chennai: Commuters may not be able to travel to transit hubs of Central, Koyambedu and airport on a single train as metro rail officials are likely to discontinue the direct service — between Central Metro and airport — after the stretch from Washermenpet to AG-DMS opens.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is gearing to commission the last leg of phase 1 network by end of the month.
At present, it operates a direct service every 14 minutes between Central Metro and airport via Nehru Park, Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Vadapalani and Alandur. “The direct service was introduced only because Anna Salai, which originally connects Central metro to airport, was not ready. Once the line is open, we may discontinue the direct service,” an official said.
The service was launched after the line between Nehru Park and Koyambedu was opened in May 2017.
It links the transit hubs at Central, Egmore, Koyambedu CMBT and Airport through a single train in a matter of less than 60 minutes.
