Chennai: Passengers will soon be able to shop at a mall, watch movies at a multiplex and even stay at a hotel at the Chennai airport as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will include these facilities in the two multi-level car parks being built on either side of the airport metro station.
The ministry of environment and forest has given the green signal for construction of these facilities as part of the six-level car park project.
The mall and multiplex will come up in the complex in the east side of the metro station while the hotel will come up in the west side. There will be seven levels of parking in the east block and six levels in the west block.
The parking lot with its mall and hotel would be connected to the terminals using a link bridge that would connect to the walkalator tube which runs parallel to the domestic and international terminals.
The official said the mall and the hotel are meant primarily for the passengers but visitors too would be able to make use of them. “The aim to have multiplex, mall and hotel is to ensure that AAI will be able to generate more non-aeronautical revenue. The space can also be used to provide amenities for passengers while increasing revenue,” he added.
