Demand for aviation fuel tax relief for Karipur airport, too

Kozhikode: People's representatives and trade bodies in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts have come up with the demand to reduce general sales tax on aviation fuel for domestic airline companies operating from Karipur airport.
The clamour has been triggered by the decision of the state government to reduce tax on aviation fuel for airlines operating from the newly-commissioned Kannur airport to 1%.
Slamming the state government for its ‘discriminatory policies’, the stakeholders said preferential treatment being meted out to Kannur airport would affect the growth prospects of Karipur airport, which has an existing fuel tax rate of 28%, run by public sector Airport Authority of India.
Kozhikode MP M K Raghavan said he would meet chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to apprise him about the impact of the decision. “The decision would result in significant fare differences between the two airports and could force passengers to prefer Kannur airport. It would also put pressure on airlines to stop their services to Karipur airport. Already Spicejet and Indigo have shifted some of their flights from Karipur to Kannur,” he added.
