ED likely to move into 21st floor of Air India building

Mumbai: With the exception of the 22nd floor, the Air India building will soon be transferred to the highest bidder.
While it’s still not final who all will move into the iconic building at Nariman Point, the finance and
properties departments of the national carrier have already moved out of the 21st floor, which according to sources is in the process of being rented out to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The move is waiting for the Centre’s nod.
The past one month has seen a flurry of activity at Air India, which gets about Rs 107 crore as annual rent, which will shoot up by a few more crores with the ED offices moving from Ballard Pier.
To make up for its perennial losses, the Air India has decided to sell the building, for which it had invited bids that ended about 15 days ago.
The advertisement for the sale had said that Air India has the ‘leasehold rights’ on the land. While the Life Insurance Corporation of India is the biggest contender, the state government has also expressed its intention to have more space for its growing administrative offices. Besides, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has also expressed interest in buying the building. Union minister Nitin Gadkari is keen that JNPT buys it and has in the past said that the government is not keen on passing on the building into private hands. Apart from the 22nd floor, which is occupied by Air India’s CMD Pradeep Kharola and other functional directors, the carrier also occupies the ground floor and the first floor.
