Figures of international flyers from Pune to stay flat in 2019

Pune: The international passenger traffic at the city airport was stable in 2018, but the authorities fear that the figures will barely rise this year despite the recently launched Jet Airways flight to Singapore.

“Lufthansa’s decision to discontinue its direct flight to Frankfurt from February is a blow for the airport. So the number of direct international flights remains at four. Just one new international flight will not make much difference. The increase in the number of passengers is likely to be negligible,” an airport official told TOI.

Officials had said last year that a few direct flights would be started to Bangkok, though there has been no news on that front. “One can expect more flights from April, and that could bring some cheer to the domestic and international sector,” an official said.

Nilesh Bhansali, director, Travel Agents Association of Pune (TAAP), said the airport need to solve some lingering issues if they wanted a major spike in international passengers

“Te airport needs to have a longer runway. We have learnt that many international airlines backed off at the last moment since preferred slots could not be provided to them. Most international flights from Pune are in the early hours,” Bhansali said.
