Flyers fume as ‘bad weather’ continues to disrupt flights

Hyderabad: Flight disruptions to and from the city’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) continued on Saturday with at least three flights to Hyderabad being cancelled and nine delayed. Similarly, the departure schedule displayed two cancellations – both to Bengaluru --and over six delays. One Indi-Go flight – 6E 2376 from Delhi to Bengaluru — was also diverted to Hyderabad after it failed to land at the Kempegowda International Airport.
While airline operators maintained that the irregularities were solely due to “bad weather conditions” prevailing in New Delhi and Bengaluru, their explanation failed to pacify passengers. Fliers insisted that the carriers were using fog as an excuse to evade the hefty penalty that they are compelled to pay – in case of delays and cancellations – as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) norms.
Apart from Bengaluru, the other sectors that were adversely affected on Saturday were: Chennai, Kolkata, Patna, Rajahmundry, Mumbai, Bhopal, Goa, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam among others. “What is happening is ridiculous. For weeks now, flights are being randomly cancelled – five-six hours prior to its time of departure – leaving regular passengers like us extremely inconvenienced,” said a frequent flier whose flight from Bengaluru to Hyderabad was taken off the charts at the last minute on Friday evening. “I refuse to believe that weather is the only reason for these disruptions. The airlines are certainly going through a bigger operational crisis that they aren’t revealing,” he alleged.
While some fliers claimed that a Hyderabad-Tirupati SpiceJet flight was delayed on Saturday morning owing to a serious technical glitch, the carrier denied it. The flight “departed after a mere 25-minute delay. There was no technical or engine issue,” the spokesperson said.
