The state government may be holding GIM every year to get investors to fly in with funds, but it is yet to identify land for a second airport for Chennai, which the ministry of civil aviation is ready to construct under publicprivate partnership.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) sources said they had not heard from the state government after a few spots were identified as proposed sites for the second airport. “We did some preliminary checks, but the state government has not shown willingness to identify and acquire land,” said an official.
And there is no discussion about aviation infrastructure at GIM 2019, though the government is looking at an aero park near Chennai. AAI officials say that several deadlines have been set to provide land for a second airport, but the state has not complied. Getting investment will not be a problem, say officials, as foreign companies have showed interest in privatisation proposals for five airports, including Thiruvananthapuram, mooted by the Union government.
A senior official said the ministry was looking at developing an aero park at the second airport site, which will offer investment and job options for companies and people in the nearby areas.
“The state government could have showcased the project and attracted investment. We hope something positive will happen in the coming days. There is huge scope for Chennai because of its location to become an aviation hub like Singapore and Dubai, but for that we need support infrastructure for airlines and airports,” said an official.
