Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has expressed its willingness to buy the iconic Air India building situated at the Mumbai's southern tip Nariman Point. This implies the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) will be the state government's rival in winning the bid.
Mumbai's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has constituted a committee to formulise the state's strategy to win the bid. Headed by the chief secretary, the committee has the chief minister's principal secretary, Bhushan Gagrani, and secretaries of Finance, Urban Development and Industry Department as its members.
Gagrani on Wednesday confirmed the state government was interested in buying the 23-storeyed building, vacated by Air India in February, 2013. The national carrier shifted its headquarters to Delhi that year.
Gagrani added the bidding process was necessary because the building could not be transferred from government to government as Air India is a company.
"The negotiations over price will begin only if we win the bid," Gagrani said.
He said the state government might shift several of its offices to the Air India building if it purchases the property.
