Meet agrees to give a push to Kannur’s air connectivity

Thiruvananthapuram: At a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan that discussed ways to improve air connectivity from the state, Air India and other private airlines expressed their willingness to operate more domestic services from Kannur international airport (Kial). Representatives of 10 domestic and 12 international airline companies were present for the meeting that was also attended by Union civil aviation secretary R N Choubey, civil aviation joint secretary Usha Padhee and other top state government officials.

Domestic major IndiGo said it will begin operations from Kannur to Chennai, Hubli and Goa from January 25 and will commence the Kannur-Thiruvananthapuram service in March. The airline is actively considering services from Kannur to Doha and Kuwait in March while planning flights to Jeddah and Dammam in another two months.
Air India CMD PS Kharola assured the chief minister that the airline will launch more services from Kannur to destinations in north India and also launch summer schedules from Kannur. He said instructions were given to ensure that there wouldn’t be exorbitant fares from Kannur to international destinations.

Air India Express (AIE), which operates services to four international destinations, will launch flights to Bahrain, Kuwait and Muscat. CEO K Shyam Sundar said that AIE will begin a service from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram. At present, AIE has flights to Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha from Kannur.
