Nepali man with Indian passport held at KIA

Bengaluru: Immigration officials caught a Nepali national who landed in Kempegowda International Airport from Nepal with a valid Indian passport on Tuesday.

Lakshman Bhattarai, 32, caught the attention of officials after they checked his previous travel records and found that he had used a Nepali citizenship ID to travel there in 2015.

When confronted, he allegedly confessed to the police that he wanted to fly to European countries to work, but was unable to get a visa. He then created fake identities from India to get a passport from a Passport Seva Kendra in 2017.

According to officials, the accused came to India in 2006 to study, but he dropped out of college. As he was interested in football, he joined various clubs and played till 2015 before quitting following an injury to his leg in a match.

In 2016, Bhattarai joined as coach of a football club in J.P. Nagar and wanted to shift to Europe to try out his luck. But as he could not manage to get a visa with his Nepali passport, he decided to get an Indian passport. He is believed to have used the PAN and Aadhaar cards obtained with fake documents and applied for a passport from Bengaluru. It was issued in 2017, officials said.
