NRIs miss flight to Australia

The joy of visiting their families in Ahmedabad dissipated into thin air when the Shahs entered the airport and saw the board display their worst fear: they had missed their flight to Australia.
Chaos at the Ahmedabad airport due to the Vibrant Gujarat rush saw their flight from Ahmedabad depart three hours late, causing them to miss their connecting flight from Delhi to Sydney. For the past 24 hours, Kanan Shah, her husband and her two children have been stuck in a hotel room in Delhi waiting for the next connecting flight which, according to the airlines, will be available only on Monday.
This means Kanan and her husband will be late for work by two days and lose their pay over this. The 49-year-old Sydney resident, who was returning after a monthlong stay here, told Mirror, “It was chaos at Ahmedabad airport. Flights were getting delayed due to VIP movement. I had a connecting China Air flight from Delhi to Sydney which I missed because my Air India flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi was late by three hours.”
Ahmedabad airport was swamped on Thursday and Friday as it handled over 30 non-scheduled flight
movements due to the Vibrant Gujarat summit. To add to the bedlam, more than 600 VIP delegates arrived and departed from the airport during these days. The passengers’ ordeal worsened when more than 30 flights were delayed due to bad weather in Delhi and Bangalore on Friday.
Kanan, who works as a pharmacist and runs a dance school, said, “We had booked a 6.50 pm flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi. It was pandemonium at the airport and my flight got delayed.
“Once we reached Delhi and missed our flight, the airlines promised to accommodate us on one of the other flights. We saw three flights to Australia leave before our eyes but nothing was done to seat us. The airport staff at Delhi were insensitive. They did not let us move around. My daughter fell ill and I could not even get her medicines. Can you imagine the plight of my children?”
The Shahs were stuck at Delhi airport for 11 hours before they were given hotel accommodation. “Till Saturday afternoon, they kept saying that they were trying to book us on another flight. Then, suddenly, the staff asked us to book a flight on our expense and claim the money from the airline later. Then they stopped responding to our calls.
