Pollution levels within limits but flights get impacted

Chennai: Though pollution levels were well within permissible limits on Monday in the city, nearly 20 domestic and international flights were rescheduled and two were cancelled owing to smoke from the bonfires lit during the Bhogi festival and the early morning fog. Visibility on the roads too became poor as the fires burnt out and started emitting smoke.

Expecting the fog to hit flight movement, Airports Authority of India rescheduled several flights and made an announcement on Twitter. Flights of various airlines, including IndiGo, SpiceJet, GoAir, Air Asia, Air India and Emirates to Mumbai, Tiruchi, Kolkata, Port Blair, Hyderabad, Colombo, Singapore and Dubai were rescheduled.

Two Jet Airways flights to Mumbai and Bengaluru were cancelled and passengers were accommodated on other flights. Some of the flights arriving in Chennai were also delayed due to smog.
