New Delhi: Controversial Central Bureau of Investigation officer Rakesh Asthana has been moved out of the agency in a sudden move. Asthana has been transferred to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, which largely looks after airport and flight security.
Rakesh Asthana was a special director in the Central Bureau of Investigation, a post seen as No. 2 in the CBI's hierarchy. He was involved in a bitter public feud with his boss, CBI director Alok Verma, because of which both of them were sent on forced leave by the government.
Rakesh Asthana is a 1984-batch Gujarat cadre IPS officer with a track record of handling several high-profile cases beginning with the fodder scam of Bihar (RJD chief Lalu Prasad was convicted in one of the cases), Godhra train burning case of 2002, 2008 Ahmedabad bomb blasts and those related to Asaram and his son Narayan Sai.
Both Rakesh Asthana and Alok Verma had accused each other of corruption. Earlier this month, a select panel, which has the exclusive power to act against CBI directors, removed Alok Verma as CBI chief.
Alok Verma was transferred to the post of director general of fire service, civil defence and home guard. Verma, however, refused the posting and resigned from the Indian Police Service.
