Rs 22.65 lakh worth gold seized from 2 air passengers

Trichy: The air intelligent unit (AIU) of customs department has seized 700g gold valued at Rs 22.65 lakh from two passengers at the Trichy International Airport in the early hours of Thursday.
According to officials from the customs department, based on a information, they intensified their routine checking process with the passengers who arrived at the airport by an Air India Express from Dubai at 12.10am on Thursday.

During the process, they grew suspicious over the activities of a passenger, identified as Feroz, 32, a native of Kerala. When the officials checked his belongings, they could not find anything. Following that they frisked him. During the process, the officials found 540g of powdered gold concealed in his trouser pocket. The total value of the yellow metal was estimated at Rs 16.50 lakh, officials said.

He had mixed the gold powder with a chemical and pasted it inside his pocket as well as waist belt. The particular chemical mixed with gold powder will help smugglers escape from the authorities without being detected by the scanner, officials said. Following that they recovered the gold and further inquiries are on, they said.

Meanwhile, the same team of officials recovered 190g of gold bars valued at Rs 6.15 lakh from a passenger who arrived here from Kuala Lumpur by an Air Asia flight in the early hours of Thursday.
