Bhopal: Riding high on the recent spurt in air connectivity, Raja Bhoj airport will get its third aerobridge by Dussehera-Diwali this year.
With the arrival of two more airlines, traffic has considerably increased at Bhopal. There are now 32 regular flights a day by Air India, Jet Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet, which will increase to 36 by March 1. This calls for at least another aerobridge to handle the volume of passengers embarking and alighting.
Raja Bhoj airport director Anil Vikram told TOI that work for installing the third aerobridge has already started. "We have begun civil and electrical work for installing the aerobridge. Once it is completed, the third aerobridge will be connected," he said.
This one is being imported from China, he said. "It will cost us around Rs 8.5 crore and we will be able to install the aerobridge by October," he added. The two aerobridges in operation now were installed by an Indonesian firm in 2014.
Vikram said with the start of new airlines, Bhopal airport is getting more traction on the national map. "Things are moving in the right direction. Infrastructure at Bhopal airport is bigger than Indore's Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar airport," he pointed out, adding that night parking of aircraft has begun at Bhopal. "SpiceJet has started using night parking service. With another aerobridge coming up soon, facilities will definitely be increased. This will attract more airlines to park their aircraft at Bhopal airport," he said.
