Thoothukudi: The district administration handed over 190 acres of land out of a total of 601 acres needed for the expansion of the Thoothukudi Airport on Monday.
A total of 410.87 acres had been acquired earlier, with 366.24 acres of land being transferred on July 21, 2017 and another 44.63 acres on April 4, 2018, before the last instalment of 190.10 acres was given.
Director of the airport N. Subramanian said that five parking bays, a new air-traffic control tower, isolation bay, fire station, a new terminal building that can handle 600 passengers, including both arrival and departure, car parking would come up at an estimated cost of ₹ 600 crore.
This would enable landing of A321 type aircraft, while currently only Q400 and ATR 72 type of aircraft could only be operated.
Night landing facility would be operational by May, 2019, he said, adding that approval was awaited from the Forest Department for setting up lights to enable night landing.
He said that the project is awaiting board approval of the AAI. Once the approval was received, work would begin after an EPC mode of contract was awarded, he said.
